In the intricacies of our professional and personal lives, we often overlook the transformative power of relationships. Christianity provides an intriguing model of growth and development in the trio of Paul, Barnabas, and Timothy. Their story offers lessons on the dynamic roles each of us needs to grow — a mentor, a friend, and a mentee.

Paul

Paul, once a fierce opponent of the Christian faith, underwent a dramatic transformation after an encounter with Jesus, emerging as a mentor figure in early Christianity. In particular, his relationship with Timothy demonstrated the extraordinary power of mentorship. Under Paul's guidance, Timothy transformed into a prominent leader, handling the Christian congregation in Ephesus. This highlights the role of a mentor in accelerating our learning curve, shaping our perspectives, and fostering our leadership potential.

Barnabas

Then, we have Barnabas, an early Christian disciple who played an instrumental role in Paul's journey. As a friend, he accepted the converted Paul into the apostolic circle, stood by him in missionary endeavors, and through their disagreements, reinforced their faith. This represents the profound value of friendship – a relationship that provides a sounding board, catalyzes personal growth, and helps us navigate life's ebbs and flows.

Timothy

Timothy stands as a shining example of the profound impact a mentee can have on us. As Paul's mentee, Timothy became a vital companion in his missionary journeys, offering him emotional and spiritual companionship. But beyond the surface, Timothy's evolution from a student to a leader was, in turn, a testament to Paul's effective mentorship. This underlines the critical role of a mentee in our lives: they reflect our ability to pass on wisdom, test our patience, and indirectly enable us to continue learning.

Moreover, Timothy's growth into a leader of the Christian congregation in Ephesus reminds us that the mentee-mentor relationship is a two-way street. By nurturing Timothy, Paul also cemented his legacy, demonstrating how empowering others could extend our influence and perpetuate our values. Hence, the role of a mentee is more than just being a recipient of knowledge. They are mirrors to our teaching prowess, bearers of our legacy, and catalysts for our continuous learning.

The “Discipleship Team”

Think of your son’s life as a startup. He’s the CEO. But even the best CEOs need guidance, and that's where you should strive to help him build his personal "Board of Directors" or a “discipleship team” as I am titling it. A mentor, accountability partner, and apprentice are solid roles that should be intentional to drive your son toward but there are others as well. Here are the board/team roles that I think every boy should have to accelerate their maturation into manhood with Christ-like character:

The Team Roles:

  1. Coach - The Question Master: A coach's role isn't to give you the answers, but to ask you the right questions. The transformative kind that sparks introspection and self-learning. I also think it would be wise later on in their life for the coach role to also be a pastor or counselor that they talk with to better understand themselves and the world.

  2. Mentor - The Experience Sharer: A mentor is someone that has been in your shoes before and has insights to share. They fast-track your growth by helping you avoid the pitfalls they've encountered and leveraging the strategies that worked for them.

  3. Friend - The Comrade: Your buddy is your peer, your confidant. Someone who understands your daily struggles and successes. They're there the people that you choose to do life together with - to share experiences, and often to hold you accountable. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with!

  4. The Apprentice - The Reflection: This is someone to whom you can impart wisdom, providing the valuable perspective of being a guide and mentor yourself. Teaching sharpens your own understanding and cultivates empathy, patience, and leadership skills. It's a reciprocal relationship where your growth is reflected in theirs.
